Become a lifeguard with American Red Cross-Certified courses

We offer water safety programs for Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor, as well as the Lifeguard Training Review Course.

Lifeguards will build the skills and confidence necessary to handle rescues and emergencies in and out of the water. Water Safety Instructors will become comfortable with all aspects of planning and teaching the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.

Classes are available at our Peninsula location.

  • You must register in person.
  • Lifeguard Training: $20 non-refundable pretest payment due at time of registration
  • Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training Review: payment in full is required at time of registration

Advanced Water Safety Training Classes

The Lifeguard program teaches you how to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED, and more. This course is for new or expired lifeguards. Upcoming Session Dates

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
  • Tread water for two minutes using only the legs.
  • Complete the timed event within one minute, 40 seconds:
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
    2. Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of seven to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    3. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Registration Info

  • The Lifeguard program includes CPR and First Aid certification.
  • $20 non-refundable pretest payment required at time of enrollment.
  • Remaining balance due at first class, after passing prerequisites.

This course teaches you how to plan, conduct, and teach the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. You'll also learn how to adapt to your surroundings, create non-threatening environments, evaluate students, and give corrective feedback.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Pass a written water safety test.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
    1. Front crawl for 25 yards
    2. Back crawl for 25 yards
    3. Breaststroke for 25 yards
    4. Elementary backstroke for 25 yards
    5. Sidestroke for 25 yards
    6. Butterfly for 15 yards
    7. Maintain floating position on back in deep water for 1 minute
    8. Tread water for 1 minute

Registration Info

  • Water pretest and written water safety test are given during the first class.

Lifeguard review classes are designed to help you update your skills and extend your certification for another two years. The in-person, formal setting gives you the chance to review the course content with an instructor and optimizes your ability to complete the knowledge and skills test.

Prerequisites

  • Anyone with a current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate may participate in the review course.

Registration Info

  • The Lifeguard Training Review Course is a two-year certification. CPR and First Aid are included.
